Projects Details

Development of AI based screening tool to support early detection of Duane-Radial Ray Syndrome (DR) in Zambia.

ARIFA led a pioneering project focused on developing an AI-based screening tool to support the early detection of Duane-Radial Ray Syndrome (DR) in Zambia. DR is a rare congenital disorder that can lead to vision impairment if not diagnosed and treated early.

The primary goal of the project was to create a deep learning–powered diagnostic system capable of identifying individuals at risk of DR using retinal (fundus) images. By enabling early detection, the tool enhances access to timely treatment, reduces diagnostic costs, and minimizes the risk of vision loss.

Key objectives included:

  • Collecting and curating fundus image datasets from online sources and Zambian ophthalmology departments;
  • Designing and training a deep learning model for accurate DR diagnosis;
  • Developing a user-friendly front-end tool to make the system accessible to clinicians and healthcare providers.
