Commissioned by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
Implemented in Tanzania by Africa Research Institute For AI (ARIFA)
The Robotics for Good Youth Challenge is commissioned by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and is being implemented in Tanzania by Africa Research Institute For AI (ARIFA) as part of global efforts to promote youth innovation and the use of technology for social good.
As Tanzania accelerates efforts to modernize agriculture and expand the use of technology for national development, the Robotics for Good Youth Challenge 2026 in Tanzania (RFGYC) is empowering children and youth to apply robotics and artificial intelligence (AI) to address real world agricultural challenges affecting farmers across the country.
The challenge is scheduled to be held on 26th February 2026 at the Dar es Salaam Institution of Technology (DIT) under the theme:
“Robotics in Agriculture: Smart Innovation for Sustainable Farming”
The challenge encourages young people to design practical, technology-driven solutions that enhance productivity, improve efficiency, and promote environmentally sustainable farming practices.
Agriculture remains the backbone of Tanzania’s economy, employing a large proportion of the population and contributing significantly to national growth. However, farmers continue to face challenges such as climate change, inefficient resource use, pests, and low yields.
Robotics and smart technologies including sensors, automation, and data-driven systems present new opportunities to make farming more resilient, productive, and sustainable.
This initiative also supports national efforts to modernize agriculture, enhance food security, and strengthen Tanzania’s innovation ecosystem by encouraging young people to develop locally relevant technological solutions.
The challenge is open to children and youth aged 09–17 years from schools and communities across Tanzania who are interested in technology, robotics, and innovation.
No advanced technical background is required — just bring your curiosity, creativity, and a willingness to learn!
Participants will gain hands-on experience in robotics, problem-solving, teamwork, and creative thinking while addressing real agricultural challenges faced by Tanzanian farmers.
The challenge also offers mentorship, learning opportunities, and recognition, inspiring young people to pursue future careers in science, technology, and innovation.
The call for applications is now open (on this link) and closes on 26th January 2026.
Approaching the day of competition, participants will take part in guided learning, mentorship, and idea development sessions leading up to the main challenge event.
Further information on timelines and participation details will be shared through ARIFA’s official communication channels.
